Ada Lovelace known as the Countess of Lovelace was an English mathematician and writer.

Ada Lovelace was chiefly known for her work on Charles Babbage’s proposed mechanical general-purpose computer, the Analytical Engine. She along with her counterpart Charles Babbage were pioneers in computing long before the first computer was built.

Augusta Ada King was born on December 10, 1815, in London, United Kingdom and was the only child of poet Lord Byron and mathematician Lady Byron.  His father separated from his wife a month after Ada was born and left England forever.

Ada Lovelace’s father, Byron died in Greece when she was eight years old. She tied the knot to William King-Noel, 1st Earl of Lovelace on 8 July 1835, becoming Lady King. They had three children: Byron (born 1836); Anne Isabella (called Annabella, born 1837); and Ralph Gordon (born 1839).

Ada Lovelace’s mathematical talents got her a long working relationship and friendship with fellow British mathematician Charles Babbage, “the father of computers”.  The pair first met in June 1833 and were introduced by a mutual friend and private tutor, Mary Somerville.

Ada Lovelace’s legacy as a role model for girls and young women considering careers in technology is remembered on Ada Lovelace Day on Tuesday 12 October. The Ada Lovelace Day (ALD) is an international celebration of the achievements of women in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM).

Who Were Ada Lovelace’s Children And What Were They Known For?

Ada Lovelace was the mother of three children including Byron King-Noel, Anne Blunt Isabella and Ralph Gordon King-Milbanke. She shares the children with her husband, William King-Noel, 1st Earl of Lovelace whom she married on 8 July 1835.

Byron King-Noel, 12th Baron Wentworth, styled Viscount Ockham, was the eldest of Ada Lovelace’s children. He was a British peer and was born on 12 May 1836. He inherited the barony of Wentworth from his grandmother.

Byron King-Noel died unmarried and childless at the age of 26, hence his barony passed to his brother, Ralph who later inherited the earldom.

Anne Isabella Noel Blunt, 15th Baroness Wentworth was born on 22 September 1837. She was also known as Lady Anne Blunt and was co-founder of the Crabbet Arabian Stud in England and the Sheykh Obeyd estate near Cairo.

Lady Anne inherited the Wentworth title after her niece, Ada King-Milbanke, 14th Baroness Wentworth died childless. She travelled extensively in Arabia and the Middle East, buying Arabian horses from Bedouin tribesmen and the Egyptian Ali Pasha Sherif.

Ralph Gordon King Noel Milbanke, 2nd Earl of Lovelace was born on 2 July 1839 at 10 St. James’s Square, London. He was a British author of Astarte: A Fragment of Truth concerning George Gordon Byron, Sixth Lord Byron.

Ralph Gordon King Noel Milbanke succeeded his father as the second Earl of Lovelace in 1893. His writing “Astarte: A Fragment of Truth concerning George Gordon Byron which he privately printed in 1906 was dedicated to his second wife, Mary Caroline Stuart-Wortley.
