Actress Barbara O. Jones, Known for ‘Daughters of the Dust,’ Passes Away at 82

Actress Barbara O. Jones, known for her significant roles in iconic films like “Daughters of the Dust” and “Bush Mama,” has passed away at the age of 82.

Barbara O. Jones, who emerged as a prominent figure from the L.A. Rebellion movement of Black filmmakers at UCLA in the 1970s, died on Tuesday, April 16, 2024, at her home in Dayton, Ohio, according to her brother Raymond Minor.

Jones starred in Haile Gerima’s “Bush Mama” and Julie Dash’s “Daughters of the Dust,” showcasing her talent and versatility.

She portrayed various compelling characters, including an imprisoned woman fighting for social justice and a welfare recipient undergoing an ideological transformation.

Throughout her career, Jones was known for her captivating performances and dedication to her craft. She appeared alongside Muhammad Ali in the 1979 NBC miniseries “Freedom Road,” among other notable roles in film and television.

Born Barbara Olivia Minor in Dayton, Ohio, Jones began her career as a radio personality before making her mark in the world of acting. Her legacy includes a wide range of roles across different genres, leaving a lasting impact on audiences and fellow actors alike.

Barbara O. Jones is survived by her children, Gina and William, as well as her brothers Raymond and Marlon.
