Ekow Smith Asante, a Ghanaian actor and film producer, has shed light on the financial issues that actors and actresses confront in the Ghanaian film industry.

He underlined that the low compensation in the industry makes it impossible for them to afford properties in desirable neighborhoods such as East Legon.

The allegations were made by the actor during an interview with Fiifi Pratt on Kingdom Radio.

He said that performers and actresses who own homes in prime districts such as East Legon did so not with money earned while acting, but rather with favors and presents from those who admire their work.

“I think building a house in East Legon would be difficult. It is very dicey because actors and actresses for instance, get favours”,

“Somebody can give me something because of my particular role in a movie. With gifts from people, it can support you to build, but I think it will take a very long time without it. How much are you paid, GHc10, 000, Ghc20, 000, Ghc30, 000 or what?”

Ekow Smith, who now lives in the United Kingdom, has joined a long list of industry stalwarts, including Mikky Osei Berko, Fred Amugi, Mama Jane, and Pascaline Edwards, who have openly admitted to the lack of financial rewards in Ghana’s acting profession.

Meanwhile, Ghanaian stars Nadia Buari, Jackie Appiah, Yvonne Nelson, Tracy Boakye, and others possess luxurious mansions in such sought-after neighborhoods.
