The report paints a concerning picture of Ghana’s air quality, indicating a significant decline from previous years.

In 2022, Ghana ranked 27th among the world’s most polluted countries, but has now risen to the 17th spot, signaling a troubling trend.

With an average PM 2.5 reading of 33.2 µg/m³ in 2023, Accra’s air pollution levels have reached an all-time high. This sharp increase underscores the severity of the situation and its impact on public health.

Accra’s ranking among the top ten most polluted cities in Africa reflects a broader issue across the continent. Only 3.8% of African cities managed to meet the WHO annual PM 2.5 guideline in 2023, highlighting the widespread nature of the problem.

The health implications of air pollution are profound, with exposure to PM 2.5 pollutants linked to respiratory diseases, cognitive impairment, and even premature death.

In Ghana alone, approximately 28,000 deaths annually are attributed to air pollution, emphasizing the urgent need for action.

Beyond health concerns, air pollution also poses significant economic challenges. Without intervention, the economic cost of air pollution in cities like Accra could soar to $137.8 billion by 2040, according to the Clean Air Fund.

As Accra grapples with its pollution crisis, there is a pressing need for comprehensive policy measures and urban development interventions to address this growing threat to public health and economic stability.
