Baghdadi killed himself and two children on October 27, 2019, by detonating a suicide vest during the Barisha raid in Syria’s northwestern Idlib Province, which was authorised by President Donald Trump.

His body was buried at sea after being given Islamic funeral rites.  ISIL confirmed his death and replaced him with Abu Ibrahim al-Hashimi al-Qurashi.

During his time as caliph of IS, Baghdadi led the Islamic State’s wars against Iraq and Syria as its leader. Baghdadi directed the use of highly contentious tactics, such as the widespread use of suicide bombings and the execution of prisoners of war.

Baghdadi was directly involved in ISIL’s atrocities and violations of human rights. These include the Yazidi genocide in Iraq, widespread sexual slavery, organised rape, flogging, and systematic executions.

As part of the organization’s propaganda efforts, he embraced brutality, creating videos depicting sexual slavery and executions by hacking, stoning, and burning.
