Hosseini Khaled, an Afghan-American, is the author of the novel A Thousand Splendid Suns. The novel is a 2007 enthralling work of authorship that depicts the lives of two women whose fates are intertwined in life, first by ordinary neighbourhood status and then as co-wives to shoemaker-Rasheed.

The book emphasises the enormous problems that the two women confront, particularly the challenges that women experience in society as “lesser” members of society. The story covers several decades, beginning in the 1960s and ending in 2003, after the Afghan war, as displaced Afghans return from Pakistan.
