Pope Francis has been hospitalized after he reportedly had breathing problems during the week. According to reports by the Vatican, he has a respiratory infection and will need to spend a few days in a hospital in Rome, Italy.

The Vatican released a statement after the announcement was made.

“Pope Francis is touched by the many messages received and expressed his gratitude for the closeness and prayer,” the statement read.

The 86-year-old religious leader presided over his weekly general audience in St. Peter’s Square on Wednesday morning (March 29, 2023).
In 2021, he underwent surgery to treat a colon problem, however, the condition returned in January 2023. That same month, he led the funeral of his predecessor, Pope Benedict XVI, who was the first pope to step down willingly in centuries. His resignation was due to issues relating to his health.
Pope Francis also shared that if his health keeps declining, he might follow in the footsteps of Pope Benedict and resign.
