Nigerian Senatorial candidate, Oyibo Chukwu has been killed by unknown gunmen while he was on his way from a campaign trip. The Labour Party candidate was returning from his last campaign trip when he was attacked and killed by bandits in southeastern Enugu State in an ambush.

“It is a devastating development for us. We are suspecting political assassination because he was favored to win the elections,” Labour Party chairman from Enugu South local area, Chinwuba Ngwu said.

According to the police, Chukwu was killed after he signed a pledge to support a peaceful electoral process ahead of the country’s general elections. There have been reports that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Enugu has suspended a poll in the event of the candidate’s death to set a new date within 14 days.
Sources indicate that the Senatorial candidate who doubles as a lawyer was attacked by armed men who opened fire on his convoy and killed him along with three others, upfront. His car was also set ablaze.
Tensions have risen in the area where the candidate was killed.
“It is a place where there are many shops, but a lot of the shops are shut because people say they are nervous and not sure what’s going to happen next,” a source reported.
