At the time of his death, Farley was in talks to co-star with Vince Vaughn in The Gelvin and to star in a David Mamet-written biopic about comedian Fatty Arbuckle. An autopsy indicated that Farley died of an overdose of cocaine and morphine, also known as a “speedball.” A “major contributing factor” was advanced atherosclerosis.
Farley’s funeral was held privately on December 23, 1997, at Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Madison, Wisconsin.
Many comedians who had worked with him on Saturday Night Live and in films, including Dan Aykroyd, Adam Sandler, Chris Rock, Rob Schneider, Lorne Michaels, Al Franken, John Goodman, George Wendt, and Phil Hartman, attended his burial. Farley’s remains were laid to rest at Resurrection Cemetery.
