Betty Shabazz enrolled at Tuskegee Institute in Alabama but was forced to leave after encountering a series of racial abuses. Betty Shabazz moved to New York to study nursing at Brooklyn State College School of Nursing. It was during Betty time as a nurse when she met Malcolm X and they married.
