10 Northern Governs To Be Trained On Peace & Security In US

To address the pressing security challenges facing Northern Nigeria, the Africa Centre at the United States Institute of Peace has extended invitations to Governor Dikko Radda of Katsina State and nine other governors from the Northwest and North Central zones of the country.

The symposium, scheduled to take place from April 23 to 25, 2024, in Washington, aims to facilitate dialogue and collaboration among key stakeholders in the region. According to a statement by Ibrahim Kaula, Chief Press Secretary to Governor Radda, the event will focus on exploring strategies to mitigate security threats and foster peace in the region.

The invited governors include Uba Sani of Kaduna, Abba Yusuf of Kano, Nasir Idris of Kebbi, Umar Namadi of Jigawa, Ahmad Aliyu of Sokoto, Dauda Lawal of Zamfara, Hyacinth Alia of Benue, Mohammed Bago of Niger, and Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau.

Kaula highlighted the significance of the symposium in recognizing the crucial role of state governors in addressing security challenges and promoting peace. He highlighted the importance of enhancing the capacity of governors in conflict prevention and peacebuilding through dialogue and collaboration.

“The Africa Centre seeks to empower governors to address the underlying causes of instability and strengthen peacebuilding initiatives at local and state levels,” Kaula said.

During the symposium, the Northern governors and other participants will engage in panel discussions focusing on the drivers of insecurity and opportunities for stabilization. The goal is to identify actionable strategies that can be implemented to promote lasting peace and security in Northern Nigeria.
