Spotify, the global streaming platform, has unveiled its list of the top 100 greatest R&B songs, evaluating them based on quality, impact, replay value, influence, and cultural significance. Wizkid’s ‘Essence’ featuring Tems secured the highest position for an African song, ranking at No. 21 on the list. This track, part of Wizkid’s 2020 album ‘Made In Lagos,’ garnered over 230 million streams on Spotify, showcasing its worldwide commercial success.

Tems’ ‘Free Mind’ claimed the No. 29 spot with more than 144 million streams. The song, from her 2020 EP ‘For Broken Ears,’ achieved notable success in the UK and US, even charting on the Billboard Hot 100, marking Tems as the first solo Nigerian female artist to achieve this milestone.
Wizkid also earned a second entry on the list with Chris Brown’s ‘Call Me Everyday’ at No. 71, amassing over 117 million streams.

Oxlade’s ‘Kulosa’ secured the No. 88 position with over 18 million streams, known for its popularity on TikTok where users recreated Oxlade’s dance moves. Among other Africans on the list is Tyla, whose Grammy-winning hit ‘Water’ from 2023 ranks at No. 60 with over 534 million streams, propelling Tyla to global fame. Cameroonian-American singer Libianca’s ‘People’ made the list at No. 99 with over 599 million streams.

The top spots on the list feature SZA’s ‘Snooze’ at No. 1, followed by Frank Ocean’s ‘Pink + White’ at No. 2, Daniel Ceaser and H.E.R’s ‘Best Part’ at No. 3, Beyonce’s ‘Cuff It’ at No. 4, and Bryson Tiller’s ‘Don’t’ at No. 5. Other notable entries include Solange’s ‘Cranes in the Sky’ at No. 6, Summer Walker’s ‘Session 32’ at No. 7, Rihanna’s ‘Needed Me’ at No. 8, Jazmine Sullivan’s ‘Pick Up Your Feelings’ at No. 9, and Chris Brown’s ‘No Guidance’ featuring Drake rounding off the top 10.
