On October 26, she tied the knot with Kei Komuro, a lawyer. And because she married a commoner, she had to give up her imperial title and leave the imperial family as prescribed by the Imperial Household Law.

The former princess would be relocating to New York after losing her status. Her marriage came with scandals mostly associated with her husband’s mother. And because there were concerns that her marriage may benefit from taxpayer money, she refused to take the $1.3 million dollars that ought to be given to women who leave the Japanese royal family after marrying a commoner.

Even though she is not the first Japanese royal to leave the family, she is the first to forgo an official wedding ceremony and the mandatory monetary gift from the government.
