Bob Bowman might not be a household name for most Americans, but his work is well-known, especially since he coached Michael Phelps and the U.S. swim team through four Olympics. So, why is this legendary U.S. swim coach now supporting France at the 2024 Paris Olympics? The answer lies in his connection to one of France’s top swimmers, Leon Marchand.

Bowman and Marchand first crossed paths at Arizona State, where Bowman coached the French swimmer, leading the Sun Devils to their first NCAA title.

Bowman has since become the head coach at Texas, but his bond with Marchand remains strong. Watching Marchand win gold in the 400-meter medley was as significant for Bowman as his achievements with American swimmers over the years.

In an interview with The Associated Press, Bowman described the experience as incredible, noting that he had never been part of something like it before. He admitted to tearing up at the end, moved by the happiness of everyone involved. Bowman compared Marchand to many of the Americans he has coached, praising his ability to focus and perform under pressure.

“Very few people can go into that environment and perform at that level,” Bowman said. “I’ve been lucky to be around a couple of them. It takes something you can’t coach. You can prepare them, but they need something inside that gets them in the right mindset to compete.”

Bowman will be by Marchand’s side at the Paris Olympics as the French swimmer competes for more medals in front of home crowds. Bowman, an American swimming legend, has become a supporter of the French team, at least for these Olympic Games and possibly beyond as Marchand continues to rise in the sport.

Bowman expressed his admiration for Marchand’s composure and humility. “It was far beyond my expectations. He was completely relaxed and normal all week,” Bowman said. “He knows who he is and what he’s about. He’s very secure, humble, and down to earth, and that shows through.”

Reasons Behind Bob Bowman’s Decision to Coach France

1. Flexibility in Coaching: One reason Bowman chose to coach the French team at the Paris Olympics is the flexibility they offer. Unlike Team USA, the French team allows him to coach swimmers from other countries as well.

2. Personal Connections: Bowman’s connection with French swimmer Leon Marchand significantly influenced his decision. Their time together at Arizona State was meaningful, and Bowman sees qualities in Marchand similar to those of the American swimmers he has coached.

3. Current Coaching Role: Bowman is currently the head men’s coach of the Texas Longhorns swimming and diving teams at the University of Texas. His experience coaching both Michael Phelps and Leon Marchand showcases his versatile coaching capabilities.

4. Impact on U.S. Swimmers: Bowman’s move to coach France has caused a disruption for top American swimmers, who are now adjusting to his absence as they prepare for the Olympic Trials.
