The current prime minister, Rishi Sunak, praised Lawson and referred to him as an inspiration.
Throughout a decade of dramatic economic transition, which featured expanding inequality and painful deindustrialization across many UK towns, Lawson is credited with fostering strong entrepreneurial energies.

He is survived by six children, one of whom is the well-known food author and celebrity chef Nigella Lawson.
Lawson had a prosperous career in financial journalism before going into politics, and he kept up his regular writing until as recently as November 2022.
From 1974 to 1992, he represented the Blaby seat in the House of Commons. During that time, he modernized London’s financial markets by adopting deregulation and computerized trading, which made London a significant worldwide financial hub.
