Who was Leon Levine?
Leon Levine graduated from Rockingham High School in 1955 and was born in Wadesboro in 1937. With a $6,000 investment, he founded the first Family Dollar Store in Charlotte at the age of 22.

After visiting a series of businesses in Tennessee that offered goods for less than $1, he had the concept for the store. Levine made the decision to sell everything for less than $2, including clothes and housekeeping products.

The bargain retailer eventually grew to be a Fortune 400 firm and a shopping destination for Americans with tight budgets. The original Central Avenue shop is still there.
The Leon Levine Foundation, one of the biggest in the Southeast, was founded by Levine and his wife in 1980. It backs initiatives and groups that support the Jewish faith, human services, healthcare, and education.
Endowment scholarships have been established by the foundation at numerous universities, including UNC Charlotte. The Levine name is inscribed on structures all around the Carolinas, including the Sandra and Leon Levine Jewish Community Center, the Levine Museum of the New South, and the Levine Center for the Arts.
Other buildings bearing the Levine name include the Levine Cancer Institute and Levine Children’s Hospital. The foundation had given out more than $300 million in awards by the year 2020.
Levine’s success began with a modest shop on the east side of town, but his influence goes far beyond monetary value.
