In October 2014, Riedijk travelled from Arnhem, Holland, to Syria. 2015 saw the marriage of Shamima Begum and the Dutchman, who was 23 at the time. Three of the couple’s children passed away.

Riedijk was raised in a “beautiful” middle-class household, according to his neighbours in Arnhem, before he converted to Islam and joined Isis.

Begum claimed in a 2019 interview with The Times that she last saw her husband at the beginning of February of that year as they evacuated the village of Baghuz, Isis’ final stronghold. He turned himself into a squad of soldiers supporting the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).

Begum’s husband, Yago Riedijk, who was 23 when they wed, has insisted that his union with the British schoolgirl was a happy one, as reported by the Daily Mail. Yet, Begum claims she was trafficked and subverted.

In February 2015, the then-15-year-old fled her home in London and soon after arriving in Syria, she married Dutch convert and Daesh fighter Riedijk. Sadly, all three of their children passed away from illness or hunger. The 27-year-old Mr Riedijk is being held in a Kurdish location in northern Syria.

Is Shamima Begum still with her husband?

Although their status is unclear, it appears that they are no longer married.

In a July 2021 interview, Riedijk declared that he was wed to Begum and that they had agreed on a dowry. Riedikj asserted that the young Isis bride is trying to return home by deceiving Western governments.
