Jeff Bezos took over the top spot in 2018 from Bill Gates, the co-founder of Microsoft. Gates held the position for several years that in 1999 he was valued at $100B.

The richest man in history is Mansa Musa I, an African from African who ruled the Malian empire.

Mansa Musa I was born in 1280. Be became the ruler of the Malian Empire and acquired most of his wealth from the production and trade of gold and salt. He was the tenth Mansa of the Malian Empire and ruled the former Ghana Empire now known as Mauritania and Mali.

He was called the Emir of Melle, Lord of the Mines of Wangara, and Conqueror of Ghanata. Although historians and economists have valued him at $400B, Time Magazine believes that his wealth was unmeasurable.
