Ritter is the husband of New Zealand actress and Showtime’s Yellowkjacket star Melanie Lynskey.

His parents are actors Nancy Morgan and John Ritter, and actress Amy Yasbeck is his stepmother.

Ritter is also the grandson of actors Tex Ritter and Dorothy Fay. Ritter has three siblings, including Tyler Ritter, who is also an actor.

Ritter dated Scottish actress, writer, and producer Marianna Palka, whom he met while both studied at Atlantic Theatre Company in New York City. Their relationship lasted from October 1999 to 2013.
