Bowman’s legacy is intertwined with Michael Phelps, the most decorated Olympian in history. As Phelps’ coach, he guided him to 23 Olympic gold medals. Their collaboration is legendary, shaping the course of swimming history.
Bowman served as a U.S. Olympic coach in 2004, 2008, and 2012. His strategic brilliance propelled Phelps to unprecedented heights.
From 2015 to 2024, Bowman transformed the Arizona State swim program. His leadership elevated the Sun Devils to national prominence.
More recently, Bowman coached French swimmer Léon Marchand. Under his guidance, Marchand achieved the Léon Double—winning gold in both the 200-meter butterfly and 200-meter breaststroke at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Bowman now heads the University of Texas Longhorns swimming and diving teams. As Director of Swimming, he continues to shape future champions.
His accolades include ASCA Hall of Fame, multiple Coach of the Year titles, and the CSCAA Division I Men’s Coach of the Year in 2024. He has a younger sister, Donna Bowman, who teaches computer science.
