Hepburn left university with the goal of becoming an actor. The day following graduation, she flew to Baltimore to meet Edwin H. Knopf, the owner of a successful stock theatrical company. Knopf was impressed with her eagerness and put her in his current play, The Czarina.
Hepburn was diagnosed with an aggressive malignancy in her neck in May 2003. She died of cardiac arrest on June 29, 2003, at the Hepburn family home in Fenwick, Connecticut, after it was decided not to medically intervene.
