Hamilton Academical (2013–2015)
Neil began his managerial career at Hamilton Academical on an interim basis in April 2013. His permanent appointment came on May 24, 2013, at the age of 31.
Under Neil’s leadership, Hamilton achieved promotion back to the Scottish Premiership through the play-off system in May 2014. Notably, Hamilton defeated Celtic away for the first time in 76 years during the 2014–15 Scottish Premiership season.
Norwich City (2015–2017)
In January 2015, Alex Neil moved to Norwich City as their manager. At 33 years old, Neil became the second youngest manager in the Football League at the time.
Norwich secured promotion to the Premier League by winning the 2015 Football League Championship play-off final against Middlesbrough with a 2–0 victory.

Neil’s tenure at Norwich ended in March 2017 after the team’s relegation from the Premier League.
Preston North End (2017–2021)
Neil took charge of Championship club Preston North End on July 4, 2017, succeeding Simon Grayson. During his tenure, Preston North End experienced a period of stability, but Neil left the club by mutual consent in March 2021.
Sunderland (2022)
Neil was appointed as the manager of Sunderland on February 11, 2022, on a 12-month rolling contract.
In May 2022, he guided Sunderland to promotion back to the Championship after a four-year absence, securing victory in the 2022 EFL League One play-off final against Wycombe Wanderers.
Stoke City (2022–Present)
On August 28, 2022, Alex Neil was appointed as the manager of Stoke City following the dismissal of Michael O’Neill. His first game in charge ended in a 1–1 draw against Swansea City, and Stoke City finished the 2022–23 season in 16th place.
