Bates, a star at Ypsilanti Lincoln and subsequently Ypsi Prep, revealed his transfer from Memphis basketball on social media on Saturday.
After initially committing to play basketball for Michigan State, he selected Memphis last spring.
“I’d like to thank Coach Penny, my teammates, and the entire coaching staff at the University of Memphis for giving me the opportunity to be a Tiger,” Bates’ Instagram post read.
“Thank you Tiger Nation for embracing me and all of you who supported our team throughout this season. With that being said, I have decided to enter the transfer portal.”

According to the Free Press, his name has not yet been added to the transfer portal.
Despite being one of the league’s youngest freshmen, AAC coaches selected him for the league’s preseason second team.
Bates, on the other hand, struggled with the Tigers, averaging 9.7 points and 3.3 rebounds per game while shooting 38.6% from the field and appearing in only 18 of the team’s 33 games.
