It is possible to trace the Al Thanis back to Mudar bin Nizar. Before moving to Qatar, the clan lived near the Gebrin oasis in southern Najd (modern-day Saudi Arabia).
The tribe was located in Ushayqir, a town northeast of Riyadh, in the 17th century.
They arrived in Qatar sometime in the 1720s. They initially settled in the town of Sikak in the south of Qatar before moving to Zubarah and Al Ruwais in the northwest.

Thani bin Mohammad, Mohammed’s father, inspired the group’s name.
Bani Qassim, Bani Ahmed, Bani Jaber, and Bani Thamer are the family’s four main factions. The predicted total family size at the beginning of the 1990s was 20,000.
Where do the Qatari royal family live?
In the nineteenth century, they relocated to Doha, commanded by Mohammed bin Thani.
