Where did Arno Penzias go to college? – Arno Allan Penzias, an American physicist and radio astronomer who passed away on January 22, 2024, at the age of 90, studied physics at the City College of New York, where he built a microwave amplifier for radio astronomy research, and later enrolled as a graduate student at Columbia University, earning a PhD in physics in 1962.

Penzias was born in Munich, Germany, in 1933, and his family fled Nazi Germany, eventually settling in the United States.

He joined Bell Labs in 1961, where he worked on ultra-sensitive cryogenic microwave receivers for radio astronomy observations.

In 1964, he and Robert Woodrow Wilson discovered the cosmic microwave background radiation, which provided evidence for the Big Bang theory.

This discovery earned them the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1978. Penzias went on to have a distinguished career in research and administration, eventually becoming Vice President and Chief Scientist of Bell Labs before his retirement in 1998.
