What is the difference between Pink Shirt Day and International Day of Pink?

Pink Shirt Day and International Day of Pink are both initiatives aimed at combating bullying, but they have different origins and focuses. Pink Shirt Day, also known as Anti-Bullying Day, originated in Canada in 2007.

It was started by two high school students who decided to take a stand against bullying after a fellow student was bullied for wearing a pink shirt. They bought and distributed pink shirts for their classmates to wear in solidarity. This act of unity against bullying has since evolved into a global movement. Pink Shirt Day is observed on the last Wednesday of February each year in Canada, and its focus is broadly on anti-bullying efforts.

On the other hand, International Day of Pink is a worldwide anti-bullying event held annually during the second week of April. While it shares the same goal of ending all forms of bullying, International Day of Pink has a more specific focus. It is aimed towards raising awareness and combating discrimination and harassment based on gender and sexual orientation, particularly anti-LGBTQ+ bullying.

In essence, while both Pink Shirt Day and International Day of Pink are committed to promoting kindness, respect, and inclusivity, they differ in their origins, dates of observance, and specific areas of focus. However, both days serve as important reminders of the collective responsibility to stand up against bullying and discrimination in all its forms.
