American professional basketball player George F. McGinnis competed in the American Basketball Association and National Basketball Association for 11 seasons.

McGinnis made history as the first sophomore to lead the Big Ten in both scoring and rebounds during his time at Indiana in 1970–71.

It was announced on April 1, 2017, that McGinnis, Tracy McGrady, Bill Self, and Rebecca Lobo would be inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2017. On September 8, he was admitted.

McGinnis’s final years saw a downturn in his health, mostly as a result of back issues that necessitated numerous surgeries. On December 14, 2023, at the age of 73, he passed away from heart problems in a hospital in Indianapolis.
