Having picked up the guitar at a young age, Swinny was born in Memphis, Tennessee in 1963. He relocated to Jacksonville, Florida, towards the beginning of the 1990s, where he and the band’s lead singer, Josey Scott, created Saliva. The group earned a record deal with Island Records in 2001 after swiftly developing a fan base in the neighborhood music scene thanks to their hard-hitting sound and vivacious live performances.
