Katharine Houghton Hepburn was a six-decade-old American actress who rose to prominence in Hollywood. She was recognized for her headstrong independence, energetic attitude, and outspokenness, and she created a movie character that reflected this public image by frequently playing strong-willed, intelligent women.

Hepburn graduated from university and was determined to become an actress. She drove to Baltimore the day after graduation to meet Edwin H. Knopf, the owner of a successful stock theater company. Knopf impressed with her eagerness, put Hepburn in his current play, The Czarina.

In May 2003, an aggressive tumor in Hepburn’s neck was discovered. On June 29, 2003, she died of cardiac arrest at the Hepburn family home in Fenwick, Connecticut, when the choice was made not to medically intervene.
