Dancehall star Vybz Kartel has been released from prison after 13 years behind bars.

Kartel, whose real name is Adidja Palmer, walked out of the Tower Street Adult Correctional Centre in Kingston on Wednesday, July 31, 2024.
Kartel’s release comes after his murder conviction, along with those of co-defendants Shawn ‘Shawn Storm’ Campbell, Andre St John, and Kahira Jones, was overturned by the United Kingdom’s Privy Council in March 2024.
The four men were initially convicted for the 2011 murder of Clive ‘Lizard’ Williams and sentenced to life imprisonment in 2014.

Their appeal to the Jamaican Court of Appeal was denied in 2020, but the Privy Council’s ruling found juror misconduct in their trial.
Following this decision, the Jamaican Court of Appeal ruled against a retrial, leading to their release.
While Kartel, Campbell, and St John are now free, Jones will remain in custody due to a previous sentence from an unrelated case.
