The 29-year-old from Haryana defeated Cuba’s Yusneylis Guzman Lopez with a dominant 5-0 victory in the semifinals, ensuring herself at least a silver medal in her third Olympic outing.

Phogat’s journey to the finals has been anything but easy. She faced a tough road, marked by an “unjust system” and personal challenges.

In the semifinals, Phogat displayed tactical brilliance, using a mix of defensive and offensive maneuvers to outclass Lopez.

The victory was a culmination of her efforts and a significant milestone in her career, especially after the setbacks she faced in previous Olympic Games.

In Rio 2016, she was stretchered off the mat due to an injury, and in Tokyo 2020, she had a forgettable performance.

After her semifinal victory, Phogat chose not to speak extensively to the media, before retreating to prepare for her final match against American wrestler Sarah Ann Hildebrandt.

Phogat’s path to the finals included a stunning victory over world No. 1 and reigning Olympic champion Yui Susaki. She handed Susaki her first defeat in 83 bouts during their pre-quarterfinal match, showcasing her class and tenacity. She then went on to defeat 2018 European champion Oksana Livach of Ukraine.

The last 18 months have been particularly challenging for Phogat. She emerged as a vocal critic of the Wrestling Federation of India and its former chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, who faces allegations of sexual harassment.

Her activism, coupled with a knee surgery less than a year before the Olympics, put her in the spotlight both on and off the mat.

Phogat’s semifinal win was a poignant moment, highlighted by the emotional response of her Belgian coach, Woller Akos. Akos, who has been a steadfast supporter throughout her journey, was seen teary-eyed as Phogat secured her place in the finals.

As Vinesh Phogat prepares for her final match, the hopes of a nation rest on her shoulders.

If she secures gold, she will become the first Indian woman to win an Olympic gold medal in wrestling.
