The Roots Biography

The Roots is an American hip-hop band formed in 1987 in the United States of America. The Roots are known for a jazzy and electric way to deal with hip-hop highlighting live instruments.

The Roots was initially formed in Philadelphia when the group initial members, Ahmir Thompson and Tariq Trotter were in the Philadelphia High School for the Creative and Performing Arts. The members started by performing on the street with Ahmir Thompson playing bucket drums and Tariq Trotter rapping on the rhythms. Their passion for music compelled them to perform on many stages.

The Roots were identified with many names. They were first known as Radio Activity, then they changed it to Black to the Future, and then finally The Square Roots. The Roots became very popular in America in 1997. They also became the most-watched miniseries in the U.S in 1997.
