Terry Robert Kirkman was an American musician and composer best known as the vocalist for the pop group The Association and the writer of numerous of the band’s big songs, including “Cherish,” “Everything That Touches You,” and “Six Man Band.”

During WWII, he began to play brass instruments as a child. He was a music major at Chaffey College.

Kirkman and five other members started their own band in February 1965. They looked through a dictionary for a new name and decided “the Association” after Kirkman’s fiancée suggested it.

Kirkman departed from the music industry and worked as an addictions counselor in California after leaving the Association.

Kirkman died from congestive heart failure on September 23, 2023, at the age of 83, following a long illness.

After stepping away from the spotlight, Terry became a drug counselor for artists in recovery. He is survived by his wife Heidi, daughter Sasha, son-in-law, and two grandchildren.
