Tems, one of Nigeria’s leading musical exports, has shown her support for the Nigerian people by postponing the release of her new music video.

The Grammy-winning star recently announced this decision in response to protests against economic hardship and poor governance. On August 1, 2024, Tems took to her X account to share the news, emphasizing the importance of listening to the people’s voices.
In her words:
“Out of respect for the ongoing protest at home, I have decided to postpone the release of Burning music video. Praying for the safety of those outside at this time. May the voice of the people be heard,”

Tems’ decision aligns with other artists and celebrities who are speaking out for better governance. Notable figures like Vector, Omah Lay, Adekunle Gold, Spyro, Mr Macaroni, Iyabo Ojo, and Konstance have all commented on the trending hashtag #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria.

The protests, which began on August 1st, are a reaction to the rising economic hardships and cost of living following some reforms by President Bola Tinubu. Protesters across various states are demanding a reversal of PMS and power subsidy removals and calling for a reduction in the cost of governance.
Fans and observers have praised Tems’ decision to delay her music video release, seeing it as a sign of her solidarity with the struggling Nigerian population. While she hasn’t announced a new release date for the “Burning” music video, which is from her debut album ‘Born In The Wild,’ it is expected to be released after the protests.
