Broadcast Journalist Richard Dela Sky and Researcher Dr. Amanda Odoi have separately filed lawsuits contesting various aspects of the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill. Mr.
Sky’s lawsuit focuses on the constitutionality of the bill, arguing that it violates several provisions of Ghana’s 1992 constitution and infringes upon fundamental human rights guaranteed by law.
Dr. Odoi, on the other hand, has raised specific concerns about provisions within the bill and is seeking a restraining order.
Her aim is to prevent the Speaker of Parliament, the Attorney General, and the Clerk of Parliament from forwarding the bill to President Akufo-Addo for his approval until the court has resolved the legal challenges.

According to a notice from the Supreme Court registrar, Her Honour Ellen Ofei-Ayeh, the hearing for these cases has been scheduled for July 3, 2024, at 9:30 am. The notice was addressed to Richard Sky, represented by Cudjoe Arthur Chambers, the Speaker of Parliament, and the Attorney General.
“Take notice that the above-mentioned case has been fixed for Wednesday the 3rd day of July 2024 at 9:30 am for hearing. If the case is called and you do not appear to answer, the Court will proceed to hear same without you,” the notice stated.
The outcome of these lawsuits is anticipated to have significant implications for the future of legislation concerning sexual rights and family values in Ghana, stirring public debate and legal scrutiny.
