Abercromby’s death was confirmed on June 18, 2024. He had been a beloved figure at St Mirren, joining the club as a youth player and making his debut in 1976.

Over the course of his career, Abercromby made 367 appearances for the club, leaving an indelible mark on its history.

During his 13 seasons with St Mirren, Abercromby was instrumental in their success, contributing significantly to the team’s First Division title win in 1976-77.

However, his crowning achievement came in 1987 when he captained St Mirren to victory in the Scottish Cup, marking the club’s third and most recent triumph in the prestigious tournament.

The memorable 1-0 victory over Dundee United at Hampden Stadium cemented Abercromby’s legacy as a pivotal figure in St Mirren’s footballing history.

Following his time at St Mirren, Abercromby continued his career with brief stints at Partick Thistle, Dunfermline Athletic, Cowdenbeath, and East Stirlingshire before retiring from professional football.
