FIFA invested nearly USD 7 million (£5.49 million) to support the construction and development of the stadium in the capital city, underscoring the global football governing body’s commitment to fostering the sport in South Sudan. The inauguration of Juba National Stadium represents a significant milestone for the nation, offering a state-of-the-art venue for both local and international matches.
Infantino, who attended South Sudan’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying match against Sudan, praised the unifying power of football. “Today, with football, we unite the world, we unite South Sudan, we unite Africa, we unite all the people who love our game,” he said. Despite the ‘Bright Stars’ losing 3-0 to Sudan, the significance of the event remained undiminished. “I am very happy today and I’m very proud to assist on this historic day, 11 June 2024, for a historic game,” Infantino added.
