On July 6, 2024, Sonya Massey, a 36-year-old Black American woman, was fatally shot by Deputy Sean Grayson of the Sangamon County Sheriff’s Office in Springfield, Illinois.

The shooting occurred after Massey had called 911 to report a suspected intruder at her home.
Details of the Shooting
Massey had placed the 911 call herself, believing there was a prowler on her property. Deputies Grayson and an unidentified officer responded to the call.
After searching the immediate vicinity and finding no suspicious activity, they approached Massey’s home. Following a brief conversation about her driver’s license and a vehicle in her driveway, the situation escalated.
Inside Massey’s home, the deputies engaged her in discussion about the boiling pot of water on her stove. Despite Massey’s attempts to comply and reassure the officers, Grayson drew his weapon and threatened her.

The confrontation escalated quickly, leading to Grayson shooting Massey three times, resulting in her death. She was pronounced dead at St. John’s Hospital.

Aftermath
Following the shooting, the Sangamon County Sheriff’s Office launched an investigation, which was handed over to the Illinois State Police.
The investigation concluded within ten days, leading to Grayson’s termination and indictment. Grayson faces charges including first-degree murder and official misconduct.
Massey’s family has retained civil rights attorney Ben Crump to represent them. The unidentified deputy involved has been placed on administrative leave.
The release of body-camera footage on July 22, 2024, has brought additional scrutiny to the case.
