Mkhonza’s began his professional football career at Bloemfontein Celtic in 1999 and stayed there until 2001. He was the captain at the age of 18 in his first season.

In his first season, he would achieve greatness by winning his first league title in the 2004–05 Premier Soccer League campaign. His move to Kaizer Chiefs saw him receive his first South Africa national team call up.

With the goal of turning around Maritzburg United, Mkhonza relocated there. In addition, he led the Team of Choice and prevented their relegation. Mkhonza would only play for the Pietermaritzburg team for a single season before leaving.

After deciding to remain in KwaZulu-Natal, Mkhonza had a successful time at AmaZulu.

He would lead the Durban-based team to a Nedbank Cup final, where they would lose 3-0 to Bidvest Wits, but it would be their first time in the top eight.

Mkhonza became a football analyst after his retirement.
