Shamima Begum is a British-born woman who entered Syria at the age of 15 to join the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant. Begum was a student at London’s Bethnal Green Academy when she and two classmates, known as the Bethnal Green trio, traveled to Syria in February 2015.

The Metropolitan Police asked media outlets that had interviewed Begum—the BBC, ITN, Sky News, and The Times to turn over any unpublished material they may have on Begum in August 2019. They requested disclosure under the Terrorism Act of 2000 to prepare for possible prosecution of Begum.

Tasnime Akunjee, her lawyer, traveled to Kurdish-controlled Syria to meet with Begum but was turned down. The Court of Appeal ruled on 16 July 2020 that Begum could return to the UK to contest the government’s decision to revoke her British citizenship. It was unclear how she would return to the UK to plead her case, given that the British government had previously stated that she would not be allowed to return.
