Russia: ‘Mask-Wearing Dispute’ Leaves Two People Dead

Gunfire was witnessed in a Moscow government services center. Authorities and Russian media have said that an armed man reportedly killed two people Tuesday, December 7, reportedly after being directed to put on a face mask. Four other people were wounded, including a 10-year-old girl.

Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin, despite not releasing any details about the assailant or intent, stated on Twitter that a suspect was in police custody. Sobyanin only revealed that the incident took place in the southeast of Moscow.

The suspect, according to Interior Ministry spokesperson Irina Volk, is said to be a 45-year-old Moscow resident.

State news agency Tass reported that the assailant, an adult male named Sergey Glazov, drew out a pistol and opened fire after entering an argument with a security guard who asked him to put on a face mask.

The assailant could face a life sentence in prison if convicted of the crime.

Russian authorities issued a national mask requirement in October 2020 as the country set a record for single-day coronavirus deaths amid a new surge in COVID cases.

On October 27, 2020, health officials reported 16,550 new cases and 320 new deaths, the highest of daily deaths recorded since the genesis of the pandemic.
