Roy McGrath, who served as the chief of staff to former Maryland Governor Larry Hogan, was wanted by the FBI for failing to appear in court in connection to his federal corruption trial.

The trial accused him of wire fraud and embezzlement during his time as the director of the Maryland Environmental Service (MES), a quasi-public agency that protects the state’s natural resources.
According to his lawyer, Joseph Murtha, McGrath sustained a gunshot wound during the encounter with the FBI and succumbed to his injuries. However, it is unclear whether the gunshot was self-inflicted or if it resulted from an exchange of gunfire with the FBI agents.

The FBI said it was reviewing the shooting incident, which occurred around 6:30 pm, per its policy. Roy McGrath joined the Republican Party at the age of 18 and created a Young Republicans organization in Southern Maryland.
Roy McGrath worked in various capacities for the Hogan administration, including as the chief of staff to Governor Larry Hogan from June to August 2020.
In 2020, Hogan appointed McGrath as his chief of staff, praising him for his leadership and commitment to public service. However, their relationship soured when it was revealed by the Baltimore Sun that McGrath had received an over $232,000 severance package when he left MES to join Hogan’s office.
Roy McGrath maintained his innocence throughout the ordeal and claimed that he was betrayed by Hogan and his allies.
