Netherlands manager Ronald Koeman criticized the use of VAR after England were given a controversial penalty in the Euro 2024 semi-final.

The Dutch team took an early lead with Xavi Simons’ powerful strike, but England’s Harry Kane earned a penalty after being caught by Denzel Dumfries following his shot.

Initially, no penalty was given, but referee Felix Zwayer changed his decision after consulting VAR. Kane scored from the spot, and Ollie Watkins scored a late winner for England, setting up a final against Spain.

Koeman expressed his frustration, stating the penalty should not have been awarded and that VAR is damaging the game.

Former England defender Gary Neville and ex-England striker Alan Shearer also disagreed with the penalty decision, both emphasizing that Dumfries was trying to block the ball, not foul Kane.

Liverpool and Netherlands captain Virgil van Dijk believed the penalty was a crucial turning point, boosting England’s confidence.

Despite the setback, Koeman supported England’s chances in the final, noting Spain’s strong performance but believing England could prevail.

Koeman praised England’s first-half play and acknowledged Spain’s offensive strength and ball possession.

However, he remained optimistic about England’s potential to win their first major trophy since 1966, encouraging them to stop Spain’s high-level play and seize their opportunity in the final.
