Ghana’s Minister for Roads and Highways, Asenso Boakye, has announced that processes are underway to reintroduce road tolls in the country. This revelation came during his inspection of deteriorating sections of the Accra-Kumasi Highway at Dadieso in the Asante Akim South Municipality of the Ashanti Region.

During the inspection, which marks his fourth since taking office two weeks ago, Mr. Asenso Boakye emphasized the importance of reintroducing road tolls to generate revenue for road maintenance. He highlighted that the tolls, once reinstated, would be digitized and automated to improve efficiency and reduce manual handling.

“Maintenance also means money. Many countries use the revenue they generate from tolls to finance their road maintenance. But in our case, we have suspended it. I think it is a good time to start discussions on bringing road tolls back,” Mr. Asenso Boakye stated. He added that the Ministry has already initiated stakeholder engagements to facilitate the reintroduction of toll collections.
The Minister urged political leaders to refrain from politicizing this initiative, stressing that it should be viewed as a crucial national development issue rather than a tool for political gain. “We must look at this from the perspective of national interest and development,” he advised.
