Renowned physicist Peter Higgs, celebrated for proposing the existence of the Higgs boson, has passed away at the age of 94, as confirmed by the University of Edinburgh.

Higgs, who died on April 8, 2024, after a brief illness at his home in Edinburgh, made groundbreaking contributions to the understanding of particle physics.

In 1964, he postulated the existence of a new particle, later named the Higgs boson, which elucidated how other particles acquire mass, thereby contributing to the formation of matter in the universe following the Big Bang.

His theoretical work, part of the standard model of particle physics, laid the foundation for decades of research aimed at confirming the existence of the elusive Higgs boson.

It wasn’t until 2012 that scientists at CERN announced the discovery of the particle using the Large Hadron Collider, a momentous achievement that validated Higgs’ groundbreaking theory.

The significance of Higgs’ contribution cannot be overstated, as it addresses one of the fundamental mysteries of the universe: the origin of mass and the structure of matter.

Without the Higgs boson, particles would not coalesce to form the matter we encounter in everyday life.

For his pioneering work, Higgs was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2013, alongside Francois Englert, who independently proposed a similar theory.

In remembrance of Higgs, Peter Mathieson, Vice Chancellor of Edinburgh University, hailed him as a “remarkable individual” whose legacy will continue to inspire generations of scientists.

Higgs’ visionary contributions have not only expanded our understanding of the cosmos but have also served as a catalyst for scientific inquiry and exploration for years to come.

Peter Higgs was preceeded in death by his ex-wife Jody Williamson, a fellow activist, their sons: Christopher, a computer scientist, and Jonny, a jazz musician. He also had two grandchildren.
