Boston Red Sox outfielder Jarren Duran issued an apology after directing an anti-gay slur toward a fan during the team’s 10-2 loss to the Houston Astros on Sunday August 11 2024.

The incident occurred in the bottom of the sixth inning when a fan behind home plate shouted, “Tennis racket! Tennis racket! You need a tennis racket!” Duran responded by telling the fan, “Shut up you f—ing f—-t,” which was audible on the game broadcast.
In a statement released by the Red Sox, Duran expressed deep regret for his words: “During tonight’s game, I used a truly horrific word when responding to a fan. I feel awful knowing how many people I offended and disappointed. I apologize to the entire Red Sox organization, but more importantly to the entire LGBTQ community. Our young fans are supposed to be able to look up to me as a role model, but tonight I fell far short of that responsibility. I will use this opportunity to educate myself and my teammates and to grow as a person.”

The Red Sox organization addressed the situation with Duran immediately after the game and echoed his apology, emphasizing their commitment to inclusivity: “We strive to be an organization that welcomes all fans to Fenway Park, and we will continue to educate our employees, players, coaches, and staff on the importance of inclusivity.”
This incident came after Duran was honored earlier in the day as the Red Sox’s recipient of the Heart and Hustle Award, which recognizes a player who embodies the passion, values, and spirit of the game.
