Johnson, who was selected by the Montreal Expos in the second round of the 1985 draft, first met his wife Lisa (née Wiehoff) at a charity golf outing when he was still a member of the team.

A fitting celebration after Johnson had the best season of his young career (308 strikeouts, second in Cy Young voting for the Seattle Mariners), the couple was married in November 1993.

Nearly 16 years later, after winning his 300th match, he presented Lisa with the game ball as a fitting tribute to the companion who had been at his side during those victories.
