The House of Windsor began in 1917 when the family changed its name from German to Saxe-Coburg-Gotha. Queen Elizabeth’s grandfather King George V, was the first Windsor monarch, and the current working royals are the descendants of King George and his wife, Queen Mary.

Elizabeth I did not have any children, and she was famously known as the Virgin Queen so her death ended the House of Tudor, which had ruled since 1400. But although she had no direct descendants, she is still related to the current monarch, Elizabeth II.

The Queen comes from a long line of nobility and has hundreds of ancestors from various royal houses in history. Her namesake, Elizabeth I, ruled for hundreds of years and is distantly related to the current monarch, despite the two Queen’s both being from separate royal houses.
Following her death, her half-sister, Mary Tudor, who ascended the throne before her, Elizabeth I spent 45 years on the throne, one of the longest monarchs in British history.
