PURC to Initiate Regulatory Measures Against ECG for Failure to Release Load-Shedding Schedule

The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has noted that the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has not followed its directive to publish a load-shedding timetable detailing the timelines and duration for each transformer injection.

Despite the directive, the regulator has not seen any evidence of the timetable’s publication by ECG. Consequently, the Commission stated that it is finalizing regulatory action on this matter.

There has been growing pressure on ECG to release the timetable amidst the erratic power supply (Dumsor) experienced in various parts of the country.

Nana Yaa Jantuah, former Director of Public Relations and External Affairs at PURC, highlighted the importance of having a timetable.

She emphasized that such a schedule would enable ECG to prioritize supplying power to critical areas such as hospitals and communities with vulnerable populations, as mandated by law.

The need for a timetable was further underscored by a tragic incident at Tema General Hospital, where a nursing mother lost her three-day-old baby allegedly due to a power outage.

Rashida Abubakar Tetteh, the distraught mother, recounted how the non-functional medical equipment during the power outage led to the loss of her child.

Nana Yaa Jantuah emphasized that a timetable would help prevent such incidents by allowing ECG to prioritize critical areas for uninterrupted power supply based on transformer locations and feeders.
