When asked about his well-being, Francis humorously responded, “Still alive,” to which Meloni echoed the sentiment. Francis expressed his happiness upon meeting Meloni again, who in turn expressed great pleasure and considered his presence a significant gift.

At 87 years old, the pontiff engaged in discussions on artificial intelligence, energy, and issues concerning the Africa-Mediterranean region.

Francis emphasized the importance of human-centered AI, insisting that humans should always make decisions regarding the use of weapons or other tools, rather than machines. He warned against depriving humanity of decision-making power and stressed the need for human oversight over AI decisions as essential to human dignity.

The pope advocated for an international agreement to ensure ethical development and application of AI. He argued that technology devoid of human values like compassion and morality poses too great a risk if developed without restraint.

He firmly stated that no machine should ever decide to take a human life.

In conclusion, Francis highlighted that while it is everyone’s responsibility to use AI wisely, it is particularly incumbent upon political leaders to establish conditions that enable its beneficial and effective use.
